Here are examples of the estimated magnitude of completeness estimated in each spatial 0.1 by 0.1 degree cell. In each cell, the frequency-magnitude distribution of past seismicity in the cell is considered and the maximum of the distribution is chosen as the completeness magnitude, below which the catalog is not complete because of insufficient network coverage. This estimate is shown below.
Because of the unphysical fluctuations between neighboring cells, due to insufficient events in cells, we smooth the estimates from each cell over several cells to obtain the estimate on the right side.
